Each year, around the holidays, people spend time with family and friends decorating their Christmas trees with festive ornaments and glamorous lights to ring in the Christmas holiday. It’s been a famous tradition for many years and something that people look forward to. There’s nothing better than completing a Christmas tree with a topper like a star or angel, and viewing the marvelous tree decorating work that has been accomplished. Christmas trees range in all types and species! This includes different shapes, sizes, and shades of green! We have highlighted some of the most popular Christmas tree types for you to learn about below!

Fir Trees

Fir trees are commonly found within the mountains of Central and Northern America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Their needles are flat and grow in a spiral from their branch tip. Fun fact! Fir needles are significantly softer than sharp spruce needles. Balsam, Fraser, and Noble firs are the most popular species within this tree family.

Balsam Fir

Balsam firs are native to the Appalachian and Northeast mountain range and are recognized for their teardrop shape and distinguishable strong fragrance. Their needle tips are semi-flat with a dark green color.

Spruce Trees

Spruce trees grow within the mountains of Western and Northern America. They are easily recognized by their pyramid-shape, four-sided needles and downward-hanging cones. The most well-known and common spruce species include blue spruce, Norway spruce, and white spruce.

White Spruce

The white spruce’s silhouette consists of blueish-green needles with a dense, symmetrical shape, which makes it so popular among Christmas trees. Fun fact about this tree is that it needs to be watered regularly to prevent needle loss.

Pine Trees

Unlike fir and spruce trees, pine tree needles grow in clusters. Despite having fewer branches, this makes them appear denser than they really are. These trees are also more sparse, which allows you to decorate them with larger ornaments. The most common species of pine are Scotch pine and Eastern white pine.

Scotch Pine

The Scotch pine is a very popular Christmas tree species in the United States. It originated from the Scottish Highlands and eventually spread across the Midwest. The Scotch pine is known for outstanding needle retention and remarkable green foliage.
